Going WR WR to start the draft?

#1

I have the 12 spot in a 12 team league. What are your thoughts on drafting from this spot?

Doubt fournette or Gordon will drop. Is it crazy to grab some combo of OBJ MT Hopkins and Julio? Not feeling Cook or Hunt this year

#2

I’m in a 12 man Standard League. I took Antonio Brown my 1st pick. Happy about that. But RBs are flying off the board like crazy. When my next pick came around my best option was McKinnon.

#3

That’s tough in a standard league, in a half or full PPR I’d take the value at WR, but in standard if you don’t have a workhorse RB it’s an uphill battle. Did you end up grabbing McKinnon then?

#4

Yeah I did. Hopefully things work out with him I think it will everyone isn’t believers. But Shanahan will definitely help him become fantasy reliable

#5

Yea, that’s the problem. McKinnon as an RB1 is really rough. I’d be taking RBs with the next several picks, because I don’t think that’s going to go well.

#6

I’ve been drafting from late position frequently this year and am a strong advocate for Zero RB. Now that means going 4-5 rounds with no RB. It doesn’t mean going WR/WR and then getting McKinnon or Mixon. That defeats the purpose of the strat.

If you’re picking 12th, i doubt OBJ will fall to you. I drafted 10th position and was able to snag OBJ/Hopkins open which was a dream scenario but going from 12th, I think you’re looking at some combination of JJ/MT/Allen which is a more than fine open. Then in the 3rd, you could pick up either one of the best TEs to fall Gronk/Kelce, or take a diggs/hilton. And then 4th, can grab another WR like cooper. Then I start picking up a bunch of RBs from the 5th to the later mid rounds as well as a lot of flier RBs in the very late rounds.

Have really liked the rosters that have resulted from this drafting style.

I will say this is a much riskier strategy and you gotta be comfortable with your ability ot draft later round RBs. If not, then you could go your traditional route and draft RB heavy.

#7

I went WR WR in a draft last night, this is the roster I came up with:

Matthew Stafford
RB Alex Collins
RB Kenyan Drake
WR Antonio Brown
WR Brandin Cooks
WR DeAndreHopkins
TE George Kittle
DST Vikings
K Wil Lutz
RESERVES
Kerryon Johnson
Dion Lewis
Nelson Agholo
Calvin Ridley
Eagles

I was chasing a viable runningback the whole draft without any luck. I am not totally unhappy with the results, but it is what it is at this point. I know the IPA’s were tasting really good, hence my taking two defenses. (facepalm)

#8

Getting Brown and Hopkins is absolute steal. Would be curious to see what your by round draft looked like but no idea how you got some of those picks where you got them. Very good value. I’m personally not a fan of Collins but I do love me some Drake. I think your RB situation is about pretty damn good when it comes to Zero RB.

In no world should AB be falling to the late rounds though. AB is a top 5 pick. If you were picking within the top 5, you don’t necessarily have to go WR/WR.

I only zero RB when I am picking late position. Like 9th or later.

#9

I’ll copy and paste the draft results, I know it seems pretty unbelievable…

I am Tannehill’s Nightmare.

#12

Glad to see someone else on the RB zero train in this RB heavy world lol. Definitely feeling more confident going into the draft with the possibility of grabbing 2 WRs at the turn now. Love your take on this dude, thanks for the input.

#13

Woah, I had to stop reading after seeing the R1 picks and then my eyes drifting into R2 as I scrolled. That is a crazy draft order…

#14

Love Kerryon and Dion this year bro. I actually really like that team comp. Starting with those Wrs is ridiculous man, you gotta take the value when it’s there. Too many people are afraid to leave the first two rounds without at least one RB and it opens up some crazy value.

#15

That is an insane draft. I wish I was in that draft. Easy money. So many horrible picks and reaches.

OBJ/Hopkins both going in the 2nd round is absolutely criminal. I would’ve taken OBJ over hopkins personally but I can’t fight you for taking Hopkins. In my own league, I picked from 10th spot and got OBJ/Hopkins open which I already thought was criminal but getting AB/OBJ open is just soooo good.

I think where you made a wrong turn was picking Alex collins in the 3rd. I would’ve rather picked up 1 other elite WR who went in the 4th. Probably Mike Evans or Hilton. Evans in the 4th round is totally insane.

Drake in the 4th is totally fine. kerryon in the 5th is a reach but fine. I believe in the talent there so he could easily be starting after a few games.

And your next mistake was picking up a QB in the 7th round. When you go WR heavy, you need to keep smashing out high upside RBs in the mid rounds. Guys like Aaron Jones / Jamaal williams, Burkhead, Michel. All of who you could have got but passed on cause you took a QB.

And then you took defenses in the 9th round which is ill advised when doing this strat. Could’ve had guys like Trey Burton to fill your TE spot, powell/crowell, wilkins etc.

Overall I’d say you started really strong in the 1-2, but then shot yourself in the foot in the mid to late rounds. otherwise, your team would be even more stacked than it is.

#16

I agree with you… I looked at it this morning and felt I totally fell apart later in the draft. I usually always go best available, but for some reason strayed away and started simply filling slots. I totally blame the craft beer. I do have one question for you though, would it be a bad idea keeping Drake in the 4rth round in my big money league? I know it seems high, however, every keeper in our league is based off rankings, so all our keepers are not going to be value keeps. Any that are kept are strictly based off 1-12 rankings being first round, 13-24 being 2nd round, 25-36 being 3rd round, etc, etc, … It’s a rough way to determine keepers, but rather fair across the board. It’s full point PPR and Drake would be my fourth round pick.

#17

That’s a really weird way to do keepers. Really doesn’t reward you for taking a risk and knowing where to take your guys. There should at least be some sort of discount. Like ADP + 1 or something.

I can’t say if its worth it for you or not without know what other options are or what your league scoring is like but if lots of other top players are already being kept, I don’t mind Drake in the 4th. But I am much higher on him than most, especially in a full PPR scoring format.

#18

I’ve been playing around with zero RB strategy in my 8-team mock drafts. If I pick 5th or later it seems very natural and like I’m definitely getting the best value. I often get Gronk in the 3rd or Kelce in the 4th. We start 3 WRs and a flex so going WR early makes even more sense to me.

But I haven’t sorted out where the best values are at RB in the mid rounds. I guess I’ve listened to so many opinions that all I’m left with is a list of guys I want to avoid at their current ADP: Collins, Ajayi, McKinnon, etc.

You should start a zero-RB thread that we can keep going to discuss mid-round values at RB. And we could also discuss where other positions fall in this strategy. I’ve been getting Cam in a few drafts as his ADP seems low to me, but also like Big Ben and Rivers.

#19

In an 8 team league, you should have much more options at the RB position to pick from but when I’ve been running zero RB in 10-12 mans, my typical targets are a mix of vets and rookies. For vets, Miller is my number 1 target in the mid round. And then I target guys like Lynch, Jamaal williams/aaron jones, rex burkhead. And then in super late rounds, I grab other peoples handcuffs like Chase Edmonds, John Kelly, etc. Guys where I can either drop after a few weeks or become instant RB1/2 if whoever in front of them goes down.

Sure I’ll make a post once I get the chance.

Not a huge fan of Cam. You have so much variance with Zero RB already that you want to grab a stable guy. Also, cam goes too early for me. I usually dont grab a QB until the double digit rounds normally and even more so / later when I run zero RB.

#20

Made a post here for Zero RB strategy. Welcome to feedback/convo.
